Abdeslam Ouaddou Reveals How Thierry Henry’s Book Shaped His Coaching Mindset

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says a story in Thierry Henry’s book helped shape the demanding standards he brings to his team. The reflection came after an emotionally charged Soweto Derby in which Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs, keeping their unbeaten start to the Betway Premiership season intact after nine matches. Ouaddou was visibly caught up in the contest. He expressed his frustration on the touchline, at one point kicking objects and loosening his tie, before celebrating wildly when the final whistle confirmed the win. The result also gave Pirates three important points in their title defence and bragging rights in one of South Africa’s biggest football rivalries. The coach said the victory was especially meaningful because his friend Henry was in attendance. The former France striker was at the match as Betway’s global ambassador, and he and Ouaddou shared a moment before kick-off. Ouaddou said he had recently been reading Henry’s book and was struck by an account of the player’s childhood. According to Ouaddou, Henry recalled scoring five goals for a youth side in Paris and hoping his father would congratulate him. Instead, his father expected him to do even better. Ouaddou said the story resonated with him as someone who wants his players to keep striving for excellence. “It’s not easy to do this job,” Ouaddou said, explaining that after playing for 17 years, taking charge of a major club such as Pirates brings a strong desire to deliver. He described himself as driven by excellence and said he tries to push his players towards their best. Ouaddou added that his intensity is intended to help the team, though he recognises that players respond differently. He said his emotions can challenge some footballers to improve, while others with a less resilient mentality may find that approach difficult. The derby win, and the inspiration he drew from Henry’s story, offered a glimpse into the standards he wants to set at Pirates.
