Cecil Afrika Puts South Africa’s Next Generation to the Test in Nairobi

Cecil Afrika is giving a young Springbok Women’s Sevens squad a chance to prove itself at this weekend’s Africa Cup in Nairobi. South Africa has already secured qualification for next January’s HSBC SVNS 2, so the tournament also offers the coaching staff an opportunity to assess emerging talent in international competition.
The squad brings together athletes with varied backgrounds, including former hockey player Isabella Nel and ex-water polo player Kiera Bowker. Four players have also featured for the Junior Springboks, while winger Voice Ndou returns after previously representing Zimbabwe. Vianca Boer will captain the side, with Jané Mulder, Shanidiné Bezuidenhout and Owami Mohuli among the few players who have HSBC SVNS experience.
Afrika said selecting the group had not been easy. According to the coach, the team has deliberately chosen a younger squad to develop its players and expose them to the demands of an international tournament. He said training performances, attitude, dedication and discipline all played a part in the selections.
The coach also stressed that development does not mean the team is travelling without ambition. Afrika said the squad’s priorities were preparation, unity and giving its best, while making clear that South Africa was not heading to Nairobi simply to take part.
The tournament has been a stepping stone for notable South African players, including Nadine Roos, Mathrin Simmers, Rights Mkhari and Eloise Webb. South Africa has won the continental title more than 10 times, and last year’s team swept its opponents before beating hosts Kenya 22-0 in the final.
This time, the South Africans are drawn in Pool A with Zambia, Zimbabwe and Rwanda. The lineup includes Junior Bok standouts Haylee Hardneck, Siphumelele Mdlalose, Tereské Kabuika-Ilunga and Lilitha Vakalisa, alongside a group Afrika hopes can turn the Nairobi opportunity into a valuable step in its development.
