Eva Boto Turns Grief for Her Godfather Into a Powerful New Ballad

Slovenian singer Eva Boto says her new song, “Samo ta večer,” grew out of a deeply personal loss. The ballad is dedicated to her godfather, who died three years ago, and gives voice to grief she had found difficult to discuss openly. Boto describes the track as one of her most intimate works, shaped by a real story rather than an imagined one.
According to Boto, she carried the pain privately for a long time. She has said that losing people close to her is among her greatest fears, and that speaking about the subject directly is hard. Writing the song became her way of mourning: instead of trying to explain everything in conversation, she put her emotions into music and chose to share them with listeners.
The song is about saying goodbye, but Boto also wanted it to reflect the love that remains after someone is gone. She recalled how her godfather and godmother would tell her how much they loved her whenever she visited. Asked what she would say to him now if she could see him again, she offered a simple answer: “I love you.”
Boto said those words can be left unsaid because people assume their loved ones already know how they feel. Yet, she believes, expressing affection aloud matters. Her new ballad invites listeners who have experienced bereavement to find comfort in its words and in the reminder that love can endure beyond loss.
The singer hopes the song will reach people going through difficult moments and help them feel understood. For her, releasing it also means allowing others to hear a part of her story that she had kept close for years.
