Helen Haines Hospitalised in Critical Condition After Alleged Vehicle Attack

Independent MP Helen Haines has undergone surgery and remains in critical condition in a Melbourne hospital after an alleged vehicle attack outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The 65-year-old has represented Indi since 2019.
According to the report, Haines was retrieving items from the boot of her vehicle when she was allegedly struck by a Toyota LandCruiser yesterday afternoon. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said she was rammed twice, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a deliberate act.
Preliminary investigations reportedly indicate that the vehicle made a U-turn before the collision. Police arrested a 43-year-old man, identified by ABC News as Brendan Nugent. He remains in custody and was questioned by detectives, the report said. A source familiar with the investigation told ABC News that Nugent was known to police, and he is also understood to have undergone a mental health assessment.
The incident has prompted concern across Australia's political community, with politicians from different sides expressing support for Haines and speaking about her reputation. Several have also raised concerns about abuse and mistreatment directed at public figures.
Albanese urged Australians to lower the political temperature following the alleged attack. The investigation is ongoing, and the report describes the incident as alleged; no finding of guilt is stated.
