Jasmine Crockett Says Nicki Minaj’s Political Voice Should Serve More Than Herself

Jasmine Crockett
Jasmine Crockett says public figures should use their influence to speak about issues affecting the country, even as she sharply questions Nicki Minaj’s motives. In remarks captured in a video, the Texas congresswoman was asked about Minaj’s political involvement and the argument that, as a non-citizen, she should not have a say in American politics. Crockett responded that people should be using their voices to influence what is happening in the United States. She pointed to the treatment of immigrants and said there are non-citizens being detained by ICE, while also citing deaths in immigration custody and what she described as the agency’s impact on communities. The congresswoman made clear that she does not approve of Minaj’s actions. She said she believes the rapper’s involvement is focused on her own interests rather than on people collectively. Still, Crockett drew a distinction between that criticism and the broader principle of speaking out: she said she welcomes voices that are directed toward helping others, rather than serving only personal interests. Crockett also urged people from different communities to work together, mentioning immigrants and citizens as well as Muslim and Jewish people. She described solidarity as especially important amid current events and said she has encouraged people to take part in civic life. Even children, she noted, can prompt conversations with their parents about voting. Her comments thus combined a pointed rebuke of Minaj with a wider appeal for public engagement. Crockett did not argue that people should stay silent because of their status or background; instead, she urged them to speak up while questioning whether Minaj’s message, in her view, is motivated by concern for the wider community.
