Joe Manganiello Unveils Three-Foot Dragon Tattoo Over Surgery Scars

Joe Manganiello has revealed a huge dragon tattoo with a deeply personal purpose. According to TMZ, the actor showed off ink stretching from his knee to his belly button on Instagram on Monday, explaining that the three-foot design covers scars from surgery during a years-long health battle.
The reveal accompanied promotion for his memoir, Bloodlines. Manganiello pointed to chapter four, where he described his illness through the image of his body sending knights to fight a Western dragon that was not actually there. In his explanation, those soldiers could not locate an enemy and instead damaged his own body.
According to TMZ, Manganiello used that metaphor to describe a nearly fatal condition he fought for years. The tattoo offered a different image: an Eastern dragon representing himself. He said covering the scars was an attempt to reclaim what little control he felt he had and symbolically tell his body to stop attacking the dragon.
The design follows earlier photographs in which he showed the physical aftermath of surgery. TMZ reports that those images included an opening in his abdomen after doctors removed his ostomy bag and reconnected his digestive tract. The new tattoo covers surgical scars linked to the health ordeal he has been discussing.
The Magic Mike actor has said he is now symptom-free and no longer taking medication after seven years battling the illness, according to the outlet. The report does not identify the condition, referring to it as a mystery illness, and gives no timeline for how long the tattoo took to complete.
For Manganiello, the explanation accompanying the reveal makes the dragon more than a dramatic piece of body art. As he described it, the image was a way to reclaim agency over a body he felt had been fighting itself—a personal meaning behind the striking scale of the ink.
