Pete Hegseth Reportedly Eyes Marsha Blackburn’s Senate Seat, Pentagon Spokesman Pushes Back

Pete Hegseth
Pete Hegseth has reportedly surfaced as a possible contender for a Senate appointment if Marsha Blackburn leaves her seat to become Tennessee’s governor. The idea was described as “chatter on the Hill,” not a confirmed plan, in reporting by Caldwell. A move to the Senate could potentially spare Hegseth an impeachment trial, the report suggested, while also questioning whether his time living in Tennessee gives him sufficiently deep roots there. Hegseth is not the only Republican said to be interested. The account says he attended a University of Tennessee football game with Blackburn, while Representative Tim Burchett sat nearby. A person familiar with Burchett’s intentions reportedly said he is also interested in the vacancy and has campaigned for Blackburn in every Tennessee county. Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell rejected the speculation, calling the claim false and saying Hegseth remains focused on leading the department. “All other speculation is foolish,” Parnell said. Hegseth’s appearance at the game had reportedly prompted some insiders to consider him a wildcard, though the article noted that he and his family had attended Tennessee games before and that the outing could simply have been about football. Hegseth moved to the Goodlettsville area outside Nashville in 2022. The report says that Tennessee residence could put his name on lists of potential appointees when elected offices become vacant, but President Donald Trump has given no indication of an imminent change at the Pentagon. Blackburn won the Republican nomination for governor on August 6 and is set to face Democrat Jerri Green in the November 3 general election. If Blackburn wins, Tennessee’s next governor is scheduled to take office on January 17, 2027. Blackburn has said she intends to choose her Senate successor and remain in the chamber until she is sworn in. State law gives the governor authority to fill a Senate vacancy, leaving open the question of who would make the appointment if the seat opened earlier.
