Stephen Bunting Says Fans’ Support Helps Him Through the Pressure of the Big Stage

Stephen Bunting says the devoted crowd support he receives at major tournaments gives him a lift when he takes to the stage, and can help him recover when a match is not going his way. The world No. 9 spoke to the Daily Star Sport after signing a new 10-year contract with Target Darts. He described the connection with his followers as an honour, saying their encouragement has become an important part of his career. Bunting also said he appreciates the messages fans send whether he wins or loses. His walk-on has drawn growing attention since he adopted “Titanium” by David Guetta and Sia. Crowds often sing along as he makes his entrance, and Bunting admitted that hearing the song come back from the audience can feel like a moment he has to stop and take in. He said he tries not to let his emotions run too high, while acknowledging that the response can move him. Bunting recently reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship and is now looking ahead to the World Championship at Alexandra Palace in December. He has reached the semi-finals twice before and hopes to go further this time. His stated aims for the rest of the year include strong runs in the major tournaments and a solid finish to the ProTour season. He also said he is moving to new 21-gram Target darts, which he believes could help him become more consistent and compete for bigger titles. Bunting added that he plans to keep up with hypnotherapy as part of his preparation. The new deal coincides with Target’s launch of Cohort, a loyalty programme that rewards members for shopping, playing and engaging with the company. For Bunting, however, he made clear that it is the support from the stands and the messages from fans that remain especially meaningful.
