Thabo Mbeki Foundation Hit With R637,000 Claim After Dialogue Cancellation

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation is being sued for more than R637,000 by an event company that says it was left with substantial costs after the foundation called off its flagship African Peace and Security Dialogue only weeks before it was due to begin.
True North Events & Communications claims it spent about seven months preparing for the 2026 event. In court papers filed in Johannesburg, the company says the dialogue was planned for September 2 to 5 at Mount Grace Hotel & Spa in Mogale City, but the foundation cancelled it on August 3. The foundation said at the time that fewer financial partners were available that year.
The company is seeking R637,371 in damages, or alternatively R732,976, along with interest and legal costs. The dispute turns in part on whether the two sides reached a binding agreement, even though the final cost estimate was not physically signed by both parties.
According to True North’s claim, its relationship with the foundation began in 2024, and it was also appointed to manage the 2025 dialogue. It says planning for the 2026 event got under way in February after the foundation’s chief operating officer, Lukhanyo Neer, instructed it to proceed. True North says it submitted an initial estimate on February 27, then revised the budget and scope several times at the foundation’s request, with a fifth and final version delivered on July 13.
The company argues that the parties’ actions showed they had reached an agreement: it says the foundation continued to consult with it, sought changes and gave directions on preparations despite the missing signature. It also says it undertook work on project leadership, staffing, service contracts and guest arrangements before the cancellation.
The foundation’s position, as reported when the event was called off, was that financial support had fallen short. The court will have to consider the competing account of whether the planning work and exchanges between the parties created a contractual commitment. The claim is an allegation by True North; the available report does not say that the court has ruled on the dispute.
