Toto Wolff Backs George Russell After Helmut Marko Questions His Title Chances

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has come to George Russell’s defence after former Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko cast doubt on the Briton’s chances of recovering his place at the top of the team. Marko said Russell had been overtaken by younger teammate Kimi Antonelli and questioned whether he would get another opportunity to fight for a world title.
Antonelli’s season has put the two Mercedes drivers in sharply different positions, according to the report. The 20-year-old is listed as 123 points ahead of Russell, with 125 points still available, and has taken nine wins in his second season compared with Russell’s three. The article says Antonelli is on course to become the sport’s youngest champion and Italy’s first champion since 1953.
Marko said Russell was no longer the team’s number-one driver and suggested Antonelli had taken that status from him. He also doubted Russell would be given the same standing elsewhere or have another chance at a title. Marko made the remarks before the US Grand Prix, which Antonelli won from pole position; Russell finished eighth after receiving a five-second penalty.
Wolff said he respected Marko’s view but disagreed with it. He argued that Russell still had the ability to win a championship, and suggested the current car did not suit him. Wolff also acknowledged that it could be difficult for Russell to see a season he expected to be his own change as Antonelli began to challenge him from the other side of the garage.
The Mercedes chief said Russell’s earlier record should not be dismissed. He pointed to the driver’s successes in Formula 2 and Formula 3, as well as his results in junior European championships and karting. Wolff’s confidence in Russell, he said, depended in part on Mercedes providing a fast car in a future season.
The exchange sets Marko’s doubts against Wolff’s belief that Russell’s past performances remain a reason to back him. For now, the standings and the team’s contrasting results have supplied the backdrop to the public disagreement.
