Wu Fushun Closes Serangoon Hokkien Mee Stall After 32 Years to Focus on Health

After 32 years serving Hokkien mee in Serangoon, Wu Fushun and his wife, Lin Rongduan, have closed their stall and turned their attention to their well-being. Chang Cheng Hokkien mee stopped trading on Oct. 31, bringing an end to a long routine of preparing food for customers six days a week.
The couple operated from Yu Xiang Coffee Shop at Block 237 Serangoon Avenue 3. Wu, 64, and Lin, 61, had reportedly worked more than 10 hours a day throughout their years in the business. Lin told Shin Min Daily News that the demanding work had affected her husband’s health, and the pair ultimately decided it was time to step away.
Word of the closure brought former and regular customers back for one last plate. Wu told Shin Min that business grew by about 50 per cent during the stall’s final week, as people made a special effort to say goodbye.
Some customers found personal ways to mark the occasion. An 11-year-old girl wrote the couple a letter of thanks, while the daughter of another regular customer brought them a box of chocolates. The report said the family had only later learned that the customer himself had died about a month earlier.
The farewell visits offered a glimpse of the connections built over decades at the stall. Customers came to show their appreciation, while Wu and Lin brought a close to a business that had shaped much of their working lives. Their decision, according to the report, was made with health and rest taking priority after years of long days behind the counter.
