New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he spoke with US President Donald Trump about helping the mother of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong travel from Ghana to say goodbye to her son. The teenager died in the Bronx on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while heading to school. In a post on X on Saturday, October 31, Mamdani said Javits’ mother deserved the chance to farewell him in person. He also wrote that no parent should have to face such grief from thousands of miles away. According to the report, Mamdani said Trump had agreed to grant her a US visa, although the White House had not publicly commented on the matter. Javits’ death has prompted an investigation. Police say three teenage boys are wanted in connection with the incident, and no arrests had been made at the time of the report. Mamdani said the city was working with the NYPD to identify those responsible and hold them accountable. He also said mobile trauma support had been sent to the area. The mayor described New York City as mourning the teenager’s death. His appeal concerning Javits’ mother has drawn attention to the family’s situation as she remains in Ghana and seeks to travel to the United States. Several public figures have also responded to the loss. Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari shared an emotional message, saying that, as a mother, she imagined Javits as her own child and expressed sympathy for his mother. Adom TV presenter Tima Kumkum and Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres also reacted, according to the report. Members of the Ghanaian community in the United States held a candlelight vigil on Friday, October 30, a day after Javits died. Mourners gathered around candles arranged on the ground, with some visibly overcome by emotion. The report says Ghanaians on social media have also called for justice for the teenager.
