Eric Dane Describes the ALS Symptoms That Changed His Life

Eric Dane says weakness in his right hand was the first sign that something was wrong. The actor, known for Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, recalled that he initially blamed the problem on texting too much or simple fatigue. When the weakness worsened weeks later, he began seeking medical advice.
Dane told Diane Sawyer that it took about nine months of appointments, including visits to two hand specialists and two neurologists, before he received an ALS diagnosis. He said he still remembers being told the three letters, adding that the diagnosis is on his mind as soon as he wakes up. The disease has left his right side no longer functioning, he said, and he fears he may lose use of his left hand in the coming months.
Despite the diagnosis, Dane has continued working. He said filming helps him feel sharp and that he feels good when he is on set, even though he has experienced setbacks. The actor was filming the final season of Euphoria in 2025, and his Amazon MGM Studios series Countdown also debuted that summer.
Dane has spoken about the impact on his family, including his daughters with Rebecca Gayheart. He said Gayheart, his wife for more than two decades, is one of his strongest supporters and that they speak every day. Gayheart has described the pair as close friends and effective co-parents, saying their family has found a way to stay connected for the children.
Dane also shared anger about the possibility that his illness could affect his daughters’ lives, saying his own father died when he was young. While he continues to navigate the physical changes and uncertainty, his public comments have focused on staying at work, leaning on Gayheart and being present for his family.
