Thomas Markle Appears in Court After Arrest Over Child Sexual Abuse Material Charge

Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, appeared in court after being charged with possessing child sexual abuse material, according to the report. Markle, 82, was arrested in Florida after the FBI searched two storage units in the Los Angeles area that he had rented for nearly 20 years.
A US judge released Markle on personal recognizance, with home detention and electronic monitoring imposed as conditions, the US Department of Justice and the US Attorney’s Office in Central California said. Images published by news outlets appeared to show him in handcuffs, accompanied by FBI personnel.
Markle has previously denied allegations that he possessed such images, describing the claims as “sick lies,” the report says. The charge is an allegation; the article does not report a finding of guilt.
The case has renewed attention on the long estrangement between Markle and his daughter. Meghan has had little contact with her father since 2018. In a statement last month, she said she was deeply distressed and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She also said she hoped people would understand why she had largely cut off contact with him.
The report does not detail what evidence investigators say they found in the storage units or describe the next court date. Markle’s court appearance follows the arrest and the judge’s decision to release him under monitoring conditions while the case proceeds.
